Lucent Technologies were selected to supply and maintain the Juniper T640 IP router platform for SuperJANET5
The selection of routing equipment was a major part of the design process for SuperJANET5. The new Carrier Grade routers have to provide very high levels of reliability, coupled with an ability to support a large number of connections at or above 10 Gbit/s and remain in the vanguard of new protocol and service developments.
In 2003 JANET(UK) undertook a review of the Carrier Grade router market. This resulted in a Request for Information (RFI) being issued to allow JANET(UK) to look further at a selection of routers with a view to better understanding the technology in preparation for a procurement. Further information about the RFI process is available:
Following the programme of investigating the new Carrier Grade router technology a procurement for IP routers for SuperJANET5 was launched.
