Update on Changes to the Service, 17th July 2006
The original IP addresses will be removed on 25 July 2006, to continue synchronisation with the service changes to configurations must be implemented before this date.
The JANET Network Time Service has recently made upgrades to its servers. During this process it was deemed neccessary to change their IP addresses. Due to this, any organisation using this service may need to amend their NTP configuration and restart the NTP process. It is recommended, where possible, that the host name is used rather than the IP address. For more detailed information please contact the JANET Customer Service.
The JANET Network Time Service delivers to JANET customers a stable time reference to organisations using the Network Time Protocol (NTP) specified in RFC 1305.

JANET provides four stratum-1 servers distributed across the network which peer with other time sources outside JANET. These servers are located at:
Server location |
DNS names |
ULCC, London |
ntp0.ja.net |
University of Bristol |
ntp1.ja.net |
University of Manchester |
ntp2.ja.net |
University of Edinburgh |
ntp3.ja.net |
It is recommended that an organisation should choose between two to four local systems to be stratum-2 servers. The local server systems do not have to be reserved systems - they can do other work. However, they should be physically distributed around the organisation, so that they are not all on the same power supply or the same segment of a LAN. Each local server should be configured as a client of a JANET stratum-1 server, and as a peer to the other stratum-2s at the organisation.
