Biography

Dr Tim Chown has led the participation of the University of Southampton in a number of projects focusing on IPv6, including the flagship EU IST projects 6NET (http://www.6net.org) and Euro6IX (http://www.euro6ix.org). In 6NET, he was co-ordinator for IPv6 transition technology studies and deployment.

His group has been working with IPv6 since 1996, and deployed the UK’s first native WAN link in conjunction with UUNet in 1997. He has been participating in the IETF since 1998, and is currently active in a number of IETF working groups, including IPv6, dhc and v6ops where he is authoring or contributing to standardisation documents.

The university has deployed IPv6 natively across a network of over 1,500 users and 1,000 hosts, as a dual-stack transition from an IPv4 service. The network encompasses host and router platforms from a variety of commercial and open source providers. A small IPv6-only testbed network is also maintained.

Dr Chown acts as an advisor to JANET(UK) in areas including IPv6, IP security, wireless networking and network QoS. He also has interests in areas including ad-hoc networking, IP multicast and multimedia, Grid and peer-to-peer applications.
