Despite security concerns, the benefits of wireless IEEE 802.11 networking in the home or the office are well recognised. Beyond this, IEEE 802.11 offers new opportunities for infrastructure builders. This talk examines an unintended side effect of the licence-free wireless standard; Community Area Networking. The term encompasses a broad range of activities; from planned campus-wide networking, to proposals or complete network anarchy. But at some level, both individuals and communities (including corporates and other organisations) can benefit from this exploitation of 802.11 technology.
