Network monitoring is the least understood aspect of network administration, and one of the most important. From monitoring bandwidth consumption and core electronics to detecting suspect traffic and identifying compromised stations on a network, no network manager should work without access to these crucial data.
This presentation will examine the locations in a distributed computing system where monitoring functions can reasonably be performed and will examine nature of the information that may be useful to capture. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the post-collection analysis of monitoring data. A brief discussion of ways ahead for future developments will form the conclusion.
