Networkshop 30 - Abstract

The SuperJANET4 Development Programme

The first stage of the SuperJANET4 project involved the installation of a Gigabit backbone network interconnecting each of the eighteen regional networks. This has been in service for well over a year and is already being upgraded, with an extension into Scotland and an increase in bandwidth from 2.5 Gbit/s to 10 Gbit/s underway.

Tied closely to the network is a programme designed to make the most of the investment in the backbone network. In terms of service delivery, much work has been done to ensure that stable operational arrangements are in place with the regional networks. This work will continue during the coming year. The international links to the backbone have also been upgraded to bring them in line in terms of bandwidth.

The SuperJANET4 development programme covers the technological and associated developments required to allow this base to be built on, and the overall vision of the SuperJANET4 project to be achieved. A number of the talks at Networkshop will cover in detail work being undertaken in a number of areas encompassed by the programme. This talk will give an overview of the programme as it currently stands, along with the whys and the wherefores of the various strands of activity.
