JANET(UK) became responsible for the administration and registration of domain names under the ac.uk and gov.uk domains on 1 August 1996
The following pages provide information on registering new names and modifying details in the ac.uk and gov.uk domains. The updated guidelines on ac.uk eligibility are now in effect. The current charging regime came into effect from 1 April 1999.
Nominet should be contacted for information on all other domains under .uk, including sch.uk.
Note: The approval system in place prior to 1 August 1996 gave rise to a number of anomalies whereby names were accepted which do not conform to current rules as to eligibility and format. These anomalies could not be rectified retrospectively by JANET(UK) and the names registered remain in use. The existence of these names does not set any precedent governing the consideration of new applications.

Businesslink Sub-Domains - requests for new sub-domain registrations under businesslink.co.uk should be submitted on the same template as for requests for new registration under ac.uk or gov.uk. Similarly modification requests for these sub-domains should use the same modification template as for ac.uk and gov.uk. There is currently no charge levied for registering or modifying these sub-domains.
