How to Connect to JANET

JANET is the UK's education and research network. It is a private, government funded network. The JANET Connection Policy defines the types of organisations that are eligible to connect and the types of connection that are available. The JANET Acceptable Use Policy specifies acceptable behaviour of users of the network. The Terms for the Provision of the JANET Service apply to all JANET user organisations.

If you are a member of a Further or Higher Education organisation or Research Council, you should speak to your local computing services section. They will be able to tell you if your organisation already has a JANET connection, and how to use it.

Primary Connection

Various types of organisations within the UK are eligible for a JANET connection. All government funded Higher Education Institutes and Further Education Colleges are currently provided with a Primary Connection, as are all the Research Councils. Other organsations may also be eligible for a JANET connection with permission from the JISC. For further information contact JANET Service Desk .

Sponsored or Proxy Connection

If you would like to connect via a Sponsored or Proxy Connection, you first need to find a host organisation that has a Primary Connection to JANET.

In many cases there will be an 'obvious' host organisation, such as a local university or college, but not all colleges and universities participate in this scheme; where this is the case, JANET(UK) can advise on organisations which already act as hosts, as a basis for finding a sponsor. However, JANET(UK) cannot make any recommendations as to the quality of service provided by any individual host organisation.

Further information for RNOs and primary connections about hosting sponsored and proxy connections is available in the document 'Sponsored and Proxy Connections to JANET - Guidelines for Licence Holders' (currently being updated).
