The widening of access to JANET beyond the classroom and computer lab is increasingly being achieved with wireless networks. 802.11-based Wireless LANs are reasonably priced and can be installed quickly and securely, making them ideal for both campus-wide and also home networking.
New protocols and technical advances are being driven by the high value of the wireless market. In the UK, Ofcom continues to regulate and promote increasing use of the technologies. JANET(UK) seeks to track the wireless space and promote appropriateuse of the available products and techniques.
In order to aid the JANET community in wireless networking, JANET(UK) has established a Wireless Technology Development Area, which is steered by the JANET Wireless Advisory Group (WAG).
The WAG's community experts both provide input to JANET(UK)'s wireless programme and generate advice for the education sector.
The WAG administers a funded open call for wireless networking case studies.
The JANET Wireless Technology Advisory Service (WTAS) was launched on April 4th 2007.
The service is available to academic and research organisations and will provide unbiased expert advice on a wide range wireless technologies and their implementation. Further information is available.
