Some types of research into how networks behave have to be done on production networks. Where research may lead to improvements, this is clearly to the benefit of JANET and its users. However, any research on JANET must not harm either the JANET service or the privacy of users of the network. It must also comply with the requirements of the law.
Some research can be done using only summary data collected by JANET(UK) for reporting and planning purposes but if research involves detailed information about network traffic flows then additional safeguards are required. JANET(UK) has therefore adopted a Policy on Research Use of Network Traffic Data that will permit such research, subject to a contract protecting the interests of the network, its users, JANET(UK) and the research organisation.
Researchers who are interested in access to JANET data should contact the JANET Service Desk in the first instance.
