Different users and researchers need and use data in different ways. For many, a simple web interface may be the best solution to view data gathered through a measurement architecture. For others, access to raw metric data is essential to allow them to process the data in ways meaningful to their research activities.
Certain users, such as the Regional Network Operators and Network Operations Centres, may also need access to more data than can be made publicly available.
This work will develop suitable interfaces to network performance data to allow differing groups of users access to the most appropriate data sets, in the most appropriate way.
JANET(UK) currently provides the JANET Netsight system, which allows connected organisations and Regional Networks to see packet loss, bandwidth utilization and latency for their JANET access links. This data is gathered in five minute intervals and is made available through a web interface.
Increasingly, some organisations and especially research groups have been asking for more visibility of both the core JANET network and their own access links. JANET(UK) has therefore started a project to investigate methods of providing enhanced data, including visualization and raw data delivery which will build on that previously made available by the Netsight system.
A sample file of bandwidth usage across JANET is available.
