THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE JRS AND SHIBBOLETH

Shibboleth and the JRS (JANET Roaming Service) are complementary technologies that provide solutions to two different objectives.

The JRS is a network access technology for guest users linked to the JANET network. Before authentication, a user will typically have no access to the network or Internet. Once logged in using the JRS, a user will have access to the network and the Internet.

Once users have gained access to the Internet, Shibboleth is designed to provide them with controlled access to online resources. Therefore, once a user has logged in using the JRS, Shibboleth could then be used to provide authentication and authorisation to online resources, such as journals and media content.

JANET(UK) are currently investigating potential opportunities to integrate the two technologies to enable genuine single sign on to take place. More information will be available on these pages in due course.
